Does your student have butterflies about school starting? It's completely normal. Worry is a natural reaction to an uncertain or uncontrollable situation. However, your student doesn't have to give into the jitters and stress and let it ruin his school experience!
You as a parent can help your student mentally prepare for the next school year with these handy tips to lessen separation anxiety (for little ones) and valid concerns (for older children).
1. Listen to your student's fears and discuss how to face them
2. Discuss changes that will occur (switching grades, teachers, schools, or friends)
3. Visit school and new teachers before classes start
4. Contact parents of students in the same grade and have a get-together to make friends
5. Order curriculum early and overview courses together
6. Read the syllabus and buy all supportive resources needed
7. Participate in class orientation opportunities (print a school map and schedules)
8. Plan your goodbye strategy ahead of time and be in close contact the first week (with email, phone, notes in backpacks, being there to pick up/and drop off, etc.)
9. Play mock-role situations (both good and bad) and explain how to react
10. Keep in open communication with your student's teachers about his progress and behavior
