What does it mean to be a member of the work force in the 21st century? It means that in some way or another, you are using computers. Today's job market requires all potential employees and business owners to be proficient in a variety of computer applications.
At ICA we believe that all students must be proficient with computers to be successful in college and their careers. In order to gain that proficiency, business computer information systems teaches those necessary skills and techniques. This course teaches important skills of the workplace like the proper techniques to compose a professional email and how to use a spreadsheet to track inventory.
Business computer information systems is divided into two semesters. The first semester focuses on common programs used in business like word processors, spreadsheets, databases, and email. Every student will learn new things in this semester. Important skills like running a query on a database or exporting database data to a spreadsheet to do a mail merge email with a word processor are really important skills that show how all these programs work together. A word processor, spreadsheet program, and database program are required but you do not have to buy expensive software. The course gives directions for software that is available for free.
In the second semester, students explore techniques to make interesting and informative presentations, telecommunications, desktop publishing, and computer networks. If you are interested in graphic design, you should take this course. The presentation and desktop publishing units teach skills and techniques for using text and images to create eye-catching documents and advertising.
Each semester is independent of each other, so you can pick the semester that most interests you.
