Science experiments don't have to be limited to frog dissections and lab work with chemicals. In fact, some of the most fun science experiments happen with ordinary, everyday items at home. Make your science lessons more relevant, applicable, and interesting with these popular, do-it-yourself experiments:
Mentos Geyser – Drop a roll of Mentos into Diet Coke for a carbon dioxide eruption.
Celery Dye – Add food coloring to water and place a celery stalk in the glass to watch plant veins change color as water is absorbed.
Exploding Grapes – Cut a grape in half and microwave it to watch it turn into a flaming sphere. (Do at your own risk.)
Homemade Battery – Pennies and aluminum foil make up the main items needed for this charged-filled experiment.
As you complete these experiments with your student at home, be sure to discuss why the results occurred and what other situations can be applied to the same concept. Also, test a different variable and see how it changes the experiment. Most importantly, have fun lighting up learning in your student!
