Many people agree that vacations are one of the best parts of summer. Though better known for taking a break, relaxing, spending time in the sun, seeing new places, and visiting family and friends, family vacations also are wonderful opportunities to keep your student’s knowledge growing. With that in mind, here are a few simple ways to incorporate learning while having fun on your summer vacation:
1. Bring geographical sites to life.
Before your adventure begins, examine the geography and culture of where you are visiting, so your student develops a deeper appreciation of context. Also, be sure to study the history and social influences of the area. You can even explore the engineering of the transportation you’ll be using.
2. Utilize traveling time.
While you’re in the car or plane, do math problems related to the distances you have to travel. Also, encourage your student to journal or listen to an audio book.
3. Make activities educational.
You’re probably going to do lots of physical activities and eating on your family vacation, so calculate your daily exercise and meal nutrition to promote health education. Also, bring along regional guide books so you know what is what. In addition, you can teach photography skills while taking your family’s snapshots. Chatting with locals can also improve understanding of regional places, events, and characteristics.
4. Encourage raw curiosity.
The richest learning happens when an individual is genuinely curious, so foster your student’s natural interest in topics seen or experienced on vacation by promoting online research, hands-on examination, discussion, or further reading when you return home.
