As parents and teachers, we are often quite good at emphasizing the importance of studying for tests, but we forget to promote the benefits of studying on a daily basis. Because the techniques students use during daily studies build a foundation for the way they approach larger assignments, projects, and tests, consider implementing these 6 study habits into your student's daily routine to help them study for success.
1. Individualize. People are unique and work well at different times of the day. Encourage your student to study at a time of day when he will be most focused and productive.
2. Be consistent. When your student finds a time of day that works well, stick to it. Set aside a specific place and time for your student to study each day.
3. Focus. Encourage your student to rid the study space of distractions, such as unnecessary electronics, so he can concentrate on the task at hand. Reward him with such luxuries during short study breaks or after the homework is complete.
4. Simplify tasks. Taking on a sizable school project can be intimidating. Help your student plan ahead and break the task into smaller, more manageable parts. For example, set a goal of reading two or three chapters of a lengthy book per day or writing only a thesis statement and outline. Then, further research and writing can be completed throughout the rest of the week.
5. Organize. Help your student stay organized by encouraging and checking his use of a daily planner. Consider supplying the student with folders for each subject to keep course material neatly separated. In addition, have your student keep his designated study space tidy with necessary supplies stored neatly on hand.
6. Stay healthy. Physical health contributes to cognitive development and learning. Help your student study effectively by ensuring he gets an appropriate amount of sleep, exercise, and healthy food.
