Every four years, the presidential election increases the desire for students and parents alike to study history and government. To take advantage of this surge in interest, the history department hosted several classes over the past month to discuss the ins and outs of the electoral college and research all the candidates who ran for president. (Yes, there were more than two). In fact, the first class in the series broke the history department's attendance record with 135 students!
Along with the educational side of things, a short survey was created for the students to participate in at throughout the month of October. Students were asked what state they lived in and which candidate they would vote for if they could. These results were used to create an electoral college for ICA. The hope was that by explaining how the real electoral college worked and creating an example from the ICA survey, students would better understand the election system. Believe it or not, many students admitted they had fun learning!
