On July 27 the elementary department held an online classroom titled "History of the Olympics." In this course we discussed the history of the Olympics and some of our favorite events. We also explored the origin of the Olympics and its Greek roots, as well as the different ceremonies, customs, and symbols that are important to the Olympics, such as the flag and torch. Finally, we took a look at some of the events in the early Olympics and compared them to the events that are included today.

Involve Your Children in Back-to-School Shopping
As a child, some of the most memorable times in my life were walking into a store to pick out my school supplies. From clothes to tissues, scissors, notebooks, glue, and paper, the supply list seemed endless, and to me, back-to-school meant my favorite shopping trip of the year.
For my mom, the decisions were easy: plain, boring, and cheap. I, on the other hand, agonized over each decision. Which was going to better serve me this year, the red, blue, or yellow pencil box? The necessity of making sure I had the right number (and color) of notebooks and, of course, trying to convince my mother into purchasing as many trendy supplies as possible was a fun experience each year.
Because of my positive experiences with back-to-school shopping, I want to challenge you this year to involve your children in the purchase of school supplies and the set up of their learning space. To get started, here are a few basic school supplies I recommend:

Teacher Office Hours Now Listed in Genius
We are now just over a month into our online office hours, and many of you and your children have been very positive about the change. We are excited to continue to improve the academic support services you receive here at the academy.
To streamline the process and reduce the impact on your inboxes, you will no longer receive emails about online office hours. Instead, your child's teachers will post their office hours, links, and passwords on their Genius Bio page. To access the information, simply log in to Genius, click on course information, and select a specific class. Then, copy the link and paste it in your browser to view the office hours.

Meet Your Classmates at the Back to School Banter
At Ignite Christian Academy, part of our mission is to educate the whole child – not just academically, but also spiritually and socially. Part of the way we offer this social growth is through our monthly social activities. These events have ranged from Wii video game parties to guided conversations.
In August, ICA will host the Back to School Banter to let our students get to know their teachers and fellow students. Led by two members of the administration, the Back to School Banter is an opportunity for new and returning students in grades 7-12 to get together and talk to their classmates about a variety of topics.

Elementary Reading Challenge
The elementary department of Ignite Christian Academy has created a summer reading goal for the last full month of summer. Running from August 1-31, the "Jump into Reading" program asks students to read a certain number of books of their liking to reach the goal set for their grade level.
• Grades K-2 are required to finish 30 picture books
• Grades 3-4 have the option of 45 picture books or 2 chapter books
• Grades 5-6 need to complete 4 chapter books
To prove what you have read, please send your completed list of books to Mrs. Holland at pholland@aoacademy.com by September 7. The list needs to include the author, title, and a 1-3 sentence summary for each book completed.
At the end of the month, the students who meet the goals will receive a reading award and we recognized in a future publication of the ICA Today. So, grab a book and keep a record of what you read or have read to you during the month of August. We can't wait to see all of the exciting stories you can make it through in a month!
Latest Improvements Increase Teacher Availability
Remember the last time you packed all of your belongings into boxes, filled a moving truck, drove a number of miles, unloaded the trucks, and unpacked all of your boxes? It was likely a bittersweet time filled with a mixture of sadness for things you were leaving behind, anxiety for the things you were to face in the future, and anticipation of the benefits of the move.
