On July 27 the elementary department held an online classroom titled "History of the Olympics." In this course we discussed the history of the Olympics and some of our favorite events. We also explored the origin of the Olympics and its Greek roots, as well as the different ceremonies, customs, and symbols that are important to the Olympics, such as the flag and torch. Finally, we took a look at some of the events in the early Olympics and compared them to the events that are included today.
As an extension project after this course, we asked students to write a paragraph about a sport or event and explain why they would like to add it to the Olympic competition. Below are two of our favorites that were submitted by students who attended the class. We will be holding future classes where you can get your work published, too. We can't wait to see you in class!

A sport that I would like to see in the Olympics is a speed reading race. The reason I would like to see that is because I like to read and I read quickly. I would like to see it because there is no other Olympic sport like it. It would also be something that I could enter in when I'm old enough. I could try beating records at home to prepare for the Olympics.

I would like dancing to be in the Olympics because it is a form of art. There are a lot of different forms of dancing. Like some sports, it can be used as exercise and P.E. There are also a lot of types of dancing like hip-hop, ballet, modern jazz, zumba, the salsa, etc. Also, it is always fun to compete in dancing, and it is very fun to watch. You can also choose to work to a team as two people or by yourself.
