This Easter, ICA elementary student Maria F. participated in the 135th annual White House Easter Egg Roll. She enjoyed games and stories on the South Lawn alongside 30,000 others from across the nation. Her story, in her own words, is presented below.
White House Easter Story
by Maria Fish
I will never forget April 1, 2013 because it was a wonderful time with my family. I had so much fun! On that day, my family and I went to the White House Easter Egg Roll with our nice Easter outfits on. My daddy wore a bright orange shirt, my brother wore a lime green shirt and my mommy, sister, and I wore matching dresses with orange and green flowers just
for the event.
There were a lot of people. I mean a lot! We had to wait in a long line to go in, but that was fine because we got jump ropes along the way. Finally, it was our turn to go onto the lawn. The lawn was soft, green, and huge! It was the biggest front lawn I have ever seen! There were so many things to do! First, while we waited in a line for the Easter Egg Roll, the president, first lady and their daughters walked onto the White House front porch. They were a lot higher than we were. I had to sit on my dad’s shoulders to see them. Then, I heard someone sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” After that, the president and the first lady made a speech. Then, the meeting was over and the band on the front porch played “Sesame Street.” Finally, we got to go to The Easter Egg Roll. It was fun! I raced a colorful tie-died egg down the racetrack on the lawn.
We then went to a little area where there were many crafts to choose from. First, I made a paper kite. It was white and pink. I also drew a picture of a kite and wrote my name on it. After that, I learned how to make a flower out of tissue paper. It was so beautiful and my mom wore it in her hair. Then, we went to the science area where we learned about plants and were given a lima bean and sunflower seeds to plant at home. We also saw the White House garden. It had a lot of vegetables. As we walked off the lawn, we were given candy and wooden Easter eggs to take home.
What was amazing was that when we were there, it was sunny. As soon as we left, it was cloudy. On the way home, it rained. Isn’t that amazing? God is so awesome! Well, that’s all I have to say! We had a great day and so much fun!
