Hit the right note with students! Music theory is a one semester, course from our online academy which introduces students to the foundations of music. Great for beginners, this engaging elective for grades 9-12 covers concepts from counting and reading music to creating compositions. Ear training exercises are included to help students practice understanding and comprehension.

Topics covered include rhythm, time signatures, intervals, pitches, major and minor keys, transposition, and harmony. The online music writing application Noteflight® is used to write original compositions and is included within the course. Explore the value of music with music appreciation! This fun online academy elective for grades 9-12 fosters a deep appreciation and understanding for the purpose and development of music over the centuries. Examining music’s role within society and culture, this course begins with a look at human interaction with music. Additional topics include music fundamentals, instrument types, and musical group categories.

The beginnings of music and musical periods are also reviewed. Continuing lessons in this course from our online academy, students cover musical forms and genres, classical composers, modernism and musical influence, and musical trends of the 20th century. An enriching fine art elective, this course is a helpful supplemental study for budding musicians and artists alike. This course contains quizzes and tests to evaluate progress and student mastery. Tracing the history of art, high school students enrolled in the course also explore the following time periods and places: prehistoric art, art in ancient civilizations, and world art before 1400.

This health course guides students in understanding and caring for their bodies through the lens of God’s Word. Rooted in the truth that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), students will explore human anatomy, personal health, nutrition, emotional well-being, and safety as aspects of honoring God with their bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Each unit emphasizes responsible stewardship, encouraging students to make informed, Christ-centered decisions that support physical, mental, and relational health. By understanding their bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, students can live healthy lives reflecting their faith and care for others.

As a special note, Unit 2, Personal Health, also includes a lesson on sexual health, a topic that we know many families approach with care and conviction. We understand that every family is unique in how and when they want to discuss these important matters with their children. That’s why we are committed to clearly outlining the lesson to honor you in our approach. This lesson presents God’s design for sexuality through a biblical lens—affirming abstinence, discussing the consequences of early sexual activity, and celebrating intimacy within marriage as portrayed in Scripture. We believe that walking through difficult topics alongside Scripture helps students grow in wisdom, discernment, and faith. Still, we respect that not all families may be ready to engage with this material.

Further students’ French! Throughout French II, students continue to accompany fictional characters who are studying French in an academic year abroad in France. This course from our online academy continues to build on lessons taught in French I and provides further exposure to French culture, grammar, and vocabulary. Lessons review verbs, demonstrative adjectives, direct object pronouns, and basic sentence structure.

French vocabulary words are presented in situational daily usage such shopping, work, movies, city and country life, health issues, winter vacations, fashion, art, beach, and stages of life. Cultural differences and similarities are also examined. This course from our online academy contains quizzes and tests to evaluate progress and student mastery.

In physical fitness, students learn about the components and importance of an active lifestyle. Students in grades 9-12 learn about the benefits of physical activity and good nutrition, mental and emotional benefits of exercise, correct motion and breathing, and the value of warming up and cooling down. Flexibility, levels of cardiovascular fitness, and strength training and conditioning are also discussed in this course from our online academy.

Lessons in this course from our online academy help explain calorie burning, resistance training, isolating exercises to focus on certain body locations, and ways to stay motivated. Developing a correct mindset and realistic goals also are covered. Some course work must be done outside the online classroom, and students have the opportunity to try different exercises and keep a log of activities. The second semester is one unit and ends with a focus on learning the basics of several different sports to encourage an interest in involvement for future personal fitness goals.

Say bonjour to French! Throughout French I, students accompany fictional characters, two Americans, studying French in an academic year abroad in France. The characters are staying with host families and will be learning the language, culture, and customs of people in France, as well as in other French-speaking countries. While traveling, students in grades 9-12 learn the basics of French including verb conjugation, moods, direct and indirect objects, demonstrative pronouns and adjectives, adjective placement, and other grammatical items.

Vocabulary words in this course from our online academy are presented in situational daily usage such as greetings, alphabet, numbers, geography, schooling, family and friends, leisure time, sports, celebrations, traditions, food, daily life, the media, and summer vacations. Cultural differences and similarities are also examined. This course from our online academy contains quizzes and tests to evaluate progress and student mastery.

In Spanish II, high school students continue to travel with fictional characters to more Spanish-speaking countries, learning language and culture on the way. Language learning includes review of Spanish I material as well as the imperative and conditional forms of verbs, the passive se, more on adjective placement, uses of por and para, superlatives, and possessive adjectives.

This course from our online academy for grades 9-12 builds students’ knowledge of intermediate Spanish with fun conversation and dialogue. Lessons help students learn to read, write, and understand more complex Spanish words and sentences. Vocabulary words are presented in situational daily usage pertaining to life areas and events. Vietnam Era is a high school elective that helps students gain an in-depth look at the country of Vietnam and the factors that led to the Vietnam War and the United States’ involvement in the war. Topics in this course from our online academy include the history of Vietnam through colonization and the World Wars, the rise of nationalism, the Gulf of Tonkin incident, Vietnam soldiers and Vietcong tunnels, the American effort, and the antiwar movement.

Lessons examine President Johnson and President Nixon’s involvement in war policy, the invasion of Cambodia, secret diplomacy tactics, and the end of the war. The effects of the Vietnam War, Nixon and Watergate, prisoners of war, war’s aftermath on veterans, and U.S.-Vietnam relations today are also studied. Students explore how events of the war affected United States’ politics, foreign policy, and society.
